The Law of Attraction through the Ages
(The Rules for Reality Creation)
From just the introduction and the first chapter of The Nature of Personal Reality by Jane Roberts (a Seth book- 1974), we get a pretty good idea what is meant when we hear “The Law of Attraction” mentioned. It really means that we attract events, circumstances and people to us as a result of our directed beliefs, thoughts, emotions, desires, and expectations, or intentions.
The action of attracting takes place in a psychological realm Seth calls Framework 2. Some religions call it heaven. Scientists of old originally referred to something similar as the “ether”, but not the philosophical “ether” of Theosophy. It has been called “The Divine Presence”, “The Thought Ocean”, “Infinite Intelligence” and “The Universal Creative Medium” by Ernest Holmes in The Science of Mind.
I think the Seth material gives modern society the best explanation I have found for the mechanics of this metaphysical Law of Creation in the realm of physical reality. It does not describe the realm with one of two lofty phrases, but with many detailed analogies and explanations for various life circumstances. This is a companion paper to the writing explaining Seth’s Framework 2.
Here are some of the ways it is expressed in those few pages of the Introduction and Chapter 1 of TheNature of Personal Reality by Jane Roberts:
· “You can change your experience by altering your beliefs about yourself and physical existence.”
· “We create our personal reality through our conscious beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world.”
“The conscious mind directs unconscious activity and has at its command all of the powers of the inner self. These powers are activated according to our ideas about reality.”
·“We are gods crouched in creature-hood, given the ability to form our experience as our thoughts and feelings become actualized.”
· “Each of you, regardless of your position, status, circumstances or physical condition, is in control of your own personal experience.”
· “Whether or not you realize it, you have pursued your present course with determination, using many resources, for ends or reasons that at one time made sense to you.”
· “You see and feel what you expect to see and feel. The world as you know it is a picture of your expectations. The world as the race of humanity knows it is the materialization en mass of your individual expectations.”
· “You can change your personal world. You have only to use your ability consciously, to examine the nature of your thoughts and feelings, and project those with which you basically agree.”
·“Matter is formed by those inner qualities that give it vitality, that structure follows expectation, that matter at any time can be completely changed by the activation of the creative faculties inherent in all consciousness.”
·“There is no effect in the exterior world that does not spring from an inner source. There is no motion that does not first occur within the mind.”
·“You project your thoughts, feelings, and expectations outward, and then you perceive them as the outside reality. When it seems to you that others are observing you, you are observing yourself from the standpoint of your own projections.”
· “You are the living picture of yourself. You project what you think you are outward into flesh. Your feelings, your conscious and unconscious thoughts, all alter and form your physical image.”
·“Your feelings and thoughts form your exterior experience and the events that appear to happen to you, are initiated by you, within your mental or psychic inner environment.”
·“Exterior events, circumstances and conditions are meant as a kind of living feedback. Altering the state of the psyche automatically alters the physical circumstances.”
·“The mass conditions of the world and the situation of each individual in it, is the materialization of humanity’s progress as it forms the world.”
·“Your thoughts, feelings and mental pictures can be called incipient exterior events, for in one way or another each of these is materialized into physical reality.”
·“There is nothing in your exterior experience that did not originate with you.”
·“Interactions with others occur, yet there are none that you do not accept or draw to you by your thoughts, attitudes, or emotions. This applies in each area of life. It applies both before life and after it. In the most miraculous fashion you are given the gift of creating your experience.”
·“Your feelings have electromagnetic realities that rise outward, affecting the atmosphere itself. They group throughattraction, building up areas of events and circumstances that finally coalesce, either in matter as objects – or as events in time. Some feelings and thoughts are translated into structures that you call objects; these exist in a medium you call space. Others are translated instead into psychological structures called events that seem to exist in a medium called time. You react therefore not only to what is visible to your physical eyes in space, or to what is directly in front of you in time, but also to objects and events whose reality is still with you, though they may seem to have disappeared.”
·“Basically, you create your experience through your beliefs about yourself and the nature of reality. Another way to understand this is to realize that you create your experiences through your expectations.”
·“You make your own reality. There is no other rule.Knowing this is the secret of creativity.”
The Law of Attraction is not a new concept by any means. Over 2,600 years ago the idea was held in mind by many, as the book of Proverbs reports – “As a man thinks, so he becomes.” I am sure the idea was not new to the author who recorded it then, just as it is not new to those who have written about it since. It’s just that it is newly rediscovered each time.
Each person whose life has been changed by accepting the concept as a reality and truth has wanted to share it with others with varying personal twist sometimes added to it, with different metaphors and examples used to explain it. I can add my name to that long list.
In 1906, William Walker Atkinson published a book called Thought Vibrations. It is reported he discovered “The Secret” in the late 1880’s and validated it in his personal life experiences. Atkinson shared with the world then, in his book as follows:
· “There is no study that will so well repay the student for his time and trouble as the study of the workings of this mighty law of the world of Thought – the Law of Attraction. The Law applies to good habits as well as bad.”
· “When we think, we send out vibrations of a fine ethereal substance, which are as real as the vibrations manifesting light, heat, electricity, or magnetism. That these vibrations are not evident to our five senses is no proof that they do not exist. A powerful magnet will send out vibrations and exert a force sufficient to attract to itself a piece of steel weighing a hundred pounds, but we can neither see, taste, smell, hear nor feel the mighty force.…The Law applies to good habits as well as bad.”
“Strong expectancy is a powerful magnet. A person with a strong confident desire attracts to themselves the things best calculated to aid them- whether persons, things, circumstances, or surroundings; if they are desired hopefully, trustfully, confidently, and calmly.
And, equally true, the person who FEARS a thing generally manages to start into operation, forces which will cause the thing feared to come upon them. “
· “Your thoughts are either faithful servants or tyrannical masters – just as you allow them to be. Let your thoughts take form in action, and in turn your actions will influence your thoughts.”
· “If you scatter your thought-force, the subconscious mind will not know just how to please you and the result is that you are apt to be put off from this source of aid and assistance.”
· “The Law of Thought Attraction is one name for the law, or rather for one manifestation of it. Your thoughts are real things. They go forth from you in all directions, combining with the thoughts of like kind - opposing thoughts of a different character - forming combinations - going where they are attracted - flying away from thought centers opposing them.”
· “Your mind attracts the thoughts of others, which have been sent out by them conscious or unconsciously. But it attracts only those thoughts which are in harmony with its own.”
· “Your thoughts will mingle with those of others of like nature and mind. And you will be attracted toward each other, and will surely come together with a common purpose sooner or later, unless one of you should change the current of your thoughts.”
In the book Thought Power, originally published in 1903, by Annie Besant, she shares this:
“The mind is like a magnet, attracting and repelling, and the nature of its attractions and repulsion's can be determined by us. If we watch the thoughts which come into our minds, we shall find that they are of the same kind as those which we habitually encourage.
The mind attracts the thoughts which are congruous with its normal activities. If we, then, for a time, deliberately practice selection, the mind will soon do this selection for itself on the lines laid down for it, and so “negative” limiting thoughts will not penetrate into the mind, while the “positive” empowering will ever find an open door. We must think of that which we desire to receive, and refuse to think of that which we desire not to receive. Such a mind in the thought-ocean which surrounds it draws to itself the good.”
Fredrick Bailes wrote in the introduction to his book Hidden Power for Human Problems, published in 1957: “There is a creative law older than mankind, operating ceaselessly in everyone. It can furnish the dynamic needed to enable anyone to reach goals they have selected.
It operates inflexibly and without deviation. It is always creating something, with or without your consent. It creates bad things and it creates good things; happiness and unhappiness, success and failure. But – and here is the actual key to living – you can set the direction of its activity by cooperating with it. Let me say that again in another way: You can direct this law for your own betterment. The law exists to serve you. It is as certain, orderly, and unchangeable as are the laws of science.”
Jean Houston, a co-founder of the Foundation for Mind Research, and a pioneer and leader in the Human Potential Movement, writes in the forward for the 1998 edition of the book The Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes:
“Consciously or unconsciously we direct the flow of Universal Mind into form. In Holmes’s terms, “the cosmic engine is started but man guides it in his own life”.
"This grants us tremendous power and with it the innate responsibility to make or break our world through the extraordinary working power of our minds. Thus - the practical emphasis in The Science of Mind on schooling in the power of trained thought.
"So much of our ordinary thinking lapses into habitual patterns, with little variation from one day to the next. Our lives mirror this and fall in to serial monotony interrupted by episodes of trouble, panic, and loss. We live then, as limited, crippled versions of who and what we are, suffering the continuance of emotional plagues and toxic thoughts, and the world reflects this tragically.”
Ernest Holmes, in his book The Science of Mind, wrote in 1938:
“Each person is drawing from Life what they think into it! To learn how to think is to learn how to live, for our thoughts go into a medium that is Infinite in Its ability to do and to be. Everyone, by thinking, can bring into their experience whatsoever they desire – if they think correctly, and become a living embodiment of their thoughts.
This is not by “holding thoughts”, but by knowing the Truth…We all use the creative power of the Universal Mind every time we use our mind…All thought iscreative, according to the nature, impulse, emotion or conviction, behind the thought.
Thought creates a mold in the Subjective, in which the idea is accepted and poured, and set power in motion in accordance with the thought. Ignorance of this excuses no one with whimsical fancy….Great as the subconscious is, its tendency is set in motion by the conscious thought, and in this possibility lies the pathway to freedom…Thoughts are things, they have the power to objectify themselves; thought lays hold of Causation and forms real Substance…One of the ancient sayings is that “to the man who can perfectly practice inaction, all things are possible.”
"This sounds like a contradiction until one penetrates its inner meaning, for it is only when one completely practices inaction that he arrives at the point of the true actor, for he then realizes that the act and the actor are one and the same; that cause and effect are the same; which is simply a different way of saying: “Know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” To reduce the whole thing to its simplest form, whatever one reflects into Mind tends to take form.”…… (Chapter 18 in the book is titled - The Law of Attraction.
I think by now you get the idea that the concept of The Law of Attraction has been around for a long time. As I said previously, “The Law of Attraction” is a catch phrase for a process that governs the creation of our personal reality. All that this entails is summarized in the Seth books by Jane Roberts, especially in The Nature of Personal Reality.
What most people miss is the fact that the process is grounded in our personal belief systems. The nature of our thinking, the nature of our thoughts and emotions, are grounded in our core beliefs and all the other beliefs that collect around the core beliefs.
The Seth material deals with this fact in great detail as related to all aspects of living a fulfilled life as we solve our problems that arise, in a practical way. For the “Law” to work, requires a concerted effort in examining our beliefs and dropping the limiting beliefs that build barriers around our hearts desires.
To those who are ready to do the work, and take complete responsibility for their lives, the wisdom and knowledge will be attracted to like steel to a magnet. I will close today with one more example.
For 20 years, Napoleon Hill studied the lives of hundreds of successful men in all walks of life in various personal endeavors. When he completed his study, he compiled volumes and published in 1928, The Laws of Success. Later in 1937, Hill published a summary of those volumes in the book Think and GrowRich.
In the introduction to Think and Grow Rich he writes: “I have never known anyone who was inspired to use the secret who did not achieve noteworthy success in his chosen calling. I have never known any person to distinguish themselves, or to accumulate riches of any consequence, without possession of the secret. From these two facts I draw the conclusion that the secret is more important, as a part of the knowledge essential for self determination, than any which one receives through what is properly known as “education”…
"When Henley wrote the prophetic lines, “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul,” he should have informed us that we are the masters of our fate, the captains of our souls, because we have the power to control our thoughts.
He should have told us that our brains become magnetized with the dominating thoughts which we hold in our minds, and, by means with which no person is familiar, these “magnets” attract to us the forces, the people, and the circumstances of our life which harmonize with the nature of our dominating thoughts.”
“Whatever THE MIND can CONCEIVE and BELIEVE it can ACHIEVE” – Napoleon Hill.
So it is, the key to unlock the secret is that word BELIEVE – All things we experience in our lives, are mirrors of our thoughts, emotions, imaginations, desires and expectations held in MIND and grounded in our BELIEFS.
So now, what is it you would like to attract into your life?
Are you holding any limiting beliefs that will prevent you from achieving the result?
Do have thoughts that reflect opposition to attaining what you desire?
Is the emotional intensity you feel supporting the scope of your desire?
Can you see yourself already having accomplished it?
Take time now to answer these questions for your life.
